Web Hosting for Photographers and Online Portfolios: What to Look For

Photographers and designers need hosting for large images that still loads fast. Learn about storage, image optimisation, CDN, backups and protecting your work.

A portfolio site has an unusual problem: its most important content, high-quality images, is also the content that makes websites slow and expensive to host. Visitors judge your work within seconds, and a gallery that crawls or looks compressed undermines it. Good portfolio hosting is a balance between storage, delivery speed and protecting what you have created.

Understand where the weight comes from

A single full-resolution camera file can be many megabytes. If you upload originals and let the page scale them down in the browser, every visitor downloads the full file. A gallery of 40 such images can reach hundreds of megabytes per visit. That is slow for the visitor, expensive in bandwidth, and unnecessary, because screens only display images at a limited size.

Prepare images properly

  1. Resize for display. Export at the maximum size the layout needs, with an additional larger size for high-density screens if the design calls for it.
  2. Use efficient formats. JPEG remains universal; WebP and AVIF are supported by modern browsers and are usually smaller at similar quality.
  3. Compress sensibly. Moderate compression is invisible in most photos. Test with your own work, especially gradients and skin tones.
  4. Lazy-load below-the-fold images so they download only when the visitor scrolls.
  5. Keep originals elsewhere. Store master files on local drives and a backup service, not on the web server.

Storage: what to check on the plan

You do not need unlimited space if the website holds optimised images. A few thousand web-sized photos fit in modest storage. However, check the limits that behave differently from disk space: file count (inodes), because WordPress and gallery plugins create several resized versions of every image, and backup storage, which can double the footprint. If you also deliver full-size galleries to clients, consider a dedicated delivery service or a larger plan, and read the fair-use terms; the earlier article on what "unlimited" hosting means explains why.

Speed: hosting, caching and a CDN

Image-heavy sites benefit most from a content delivery network, which stores copies of your images on servers around the world and delivers them from a location near the visitor. Zebra Hosting sites can use Cloudflare CDN; see the CDN page for what it does. Combine it with browser caching so returning visitors do not download images again. For the server itself, SSD or NVMe storage and a current PHP version keep the page generation fast.

For most photographers, a lean WordPress setup on a WordPress hosting plan is the practical choice.

Protecting your work

No technical measure fully prevents image copying, since anything displayed can be saved. Reasonable steps include serving web-sized images only, adding a discreet watermark where it suits your brand, stating your copyright and licensing terms clearly, and disabling directory listings so visitors cannot browse your upload folders. Embed copyright and contact details in image metadata. For client galleries, use password protection and expiry dates.

Backups are your insurance

The website is a copy of your work, not the only copy, which is a good position to be in. Still, rebuilding a portfolio takes time, so keep a backup of the database and uploads. Use the host's automatic backups and download a full copy before major changes, such as switching themes.

Email and contact forms

Clients decide quickly whether to contact you, so make the form work every time. Use an address on your own domain, set up SPF and DKIM to keep your replies out of spam, and test the form monthly. See business email hosting if you want mail separated from the website.

A simple launch checklist

  • Images resized, compressed and lazy-loaded
  • HTTPS enabled and redirecting
  • CDN and caching switched on
  • Backups running and one restore tested
  • Copyright notice and contact details visible
  • Test on a phone over a mobile connection

Client galleries and large deliveries

Delivering a wedding or event set of several hundred full-size files is a different job from showing a portfolio. Large downloads consume bandwidth and storage quickly and are often covered by fair-use limits on shared plans. Use a gallery system with download expiry, or a file delivery service, and keep the portfolio site light. If you want to host client galleries yourself, a VPS with enough storage gives you more control, but plan the backup and cleanup routine before you start.
